  Background

The site on which the Palacio de Deportes is located began as a market garden and was later transformed into a bullring. On October 29, 1872, the foundation stone was placed by the Count of Toreno, who was at that time the Mayor of Madrid. The new bullring was opened on 4 September, 1874.

The architects, Lorenzo Álvarez Capra and Emilio Rodríguez Ayuso, who was from Madrid, were responsible for the bullring. This was marked by its neomudejar style, which was fully accepted by bullfight fans and served as a model for other bullrings that were later constructed in the rest of Spain.

On 14 October, 1934, the last bullfight was celebrated as 24 hours later, on 15 October, 1934, the demolition of the historical bullring commenced, the work of the Las Ventas Monumental Bullring having already been initiated. From that time onwards and until the construction of the Palacio de Deportes began, it existed as an empty site.
