Cycling and other sports
Cycling
Cycling meetings were incorporated into the calendar from the commencement of the Palacio de Deportes so as to exploit the velodrome, the highlight being the "Six Days of Cycling" trial which was celebrated until 1986 with the participation of the most outstanding cyclists over that period.
On 2 May, 1962, the "the 24 hours of Madrid" was held with the participants doing 3.780 laps of the velodrome, equivalent to 756 kilometres. The pair formed by Poblet and Bover won the trial. The most outstanding cyclists of the world competed in the velodrome, as in the “The Grand Tour Revenge" cycling night which was held on 9 September, 1964, with the participation, among others, of Anquetil, Poulidor or Martín Bahamontes.
Other sports
The Palacio de Deportes has also been the venue of other sports. Among these, the organisation of the 1960 World Roller skating Hockey Championship in which Spain finished in second position and the I Ice hockey Tournament between the Spanish, French and Swiss selections (15-VI-1963) should be highlighted.
From its commencement, the use of the Palacio de Deportes for equestrian competitions was also discussed although not many events of this type were finally organised. Outstanding among these was the 1964 Spanish Show Jumping Championships with the participation of Bohórquez, Goyoaga and Goyeneche.
The Palacio de Deportes was the venue for the World Figure Skating Championships on 24 September, 1965. In 1985, it was the venue for the World Indoor Football Championship and the World Bodybuilding Championships were celebrated in 1987.
On 16 June, 1988 the I Indoor Trial of the Community of Madrid was held with the participation of Jordi Tarrés. This later became a traditional event and was held every year within the programme of shows offered by the Palacio de Deportes.
The Palacio de Deportes has been the venue for various tennis tournaments which include the Tennis Tournament in 1978 between the European and South American selections with the participation, among others, of Illie Nastase and Guillermo Vilas and with the victory of the former player, or the Winston Trophy held in 1990 with the participation of Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Arancha Sánchez Vicario and Mónica Seles, who was the winner.
In 1992 the I Community of Madrid Supercross was organised.
