In 1985, the International Athletics Meeting "Memorial José María Cagigal"
was first held, this being later integrated into the international annual calendar. Ben
Johnson was present in the IV Meeting in 1988. In the IX Meeting (11 February, 1993), Isaac Viciosa was the winner of the 3000 metre race.
Among the large number of indoor track meetings in all modalities and categories held in the Palacio de Deportes,
the 1982 Spanish Athletics Championships, in which Colomán Trabado set a new world record in the distance of 600 metres, deserves special mention.
It is also necessary to highlight the European Indoor Athletics Championships in 1986, in which Luis González won the gold medal in the 1500 metre race.
