Outdoors and sports

Just a few kilometres away from the capital and the main cities surrounding it, the greenest Madrid can be found. Madrid has parks such as the Monte de El Pardo and the casa de Campo, but also preserves other green spaces inside the city such as El Retiro, El Parque del Oeste and La Dehesa de la Villa. We must not forget though that Madrid’s streets are among the most abundant in trees in Europe.

Other areas in the region do not fall behind. Madrid’s visitor can enjoy the south lagoons, near Chinchón, El Hayedo de Montejo and the Parque Natural de la Cumbre, Circco y Lagunas de Peñalara in the Sierra de Guadarrama.

There is also a passion for sports in Madrid. Every year Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open takes place in our city, but also basketball championships such as the Eurobasket have taken place here. Practicing golf and having the possibility to enjoy live football teams such as Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid or Getafe C.F. are other attractive options that our region has to offer.

PARKS, GARDENS & FORESTS

A great way of enjoying the city’s great touristic and cultural diversity is by discovering its many gardens and parks complexes.

The best known is, unarguably, the Retiro park in the capital’s city centre: 118 hectares full of trees, promenades and even a lake.

If you enjoy nature, you may consider visiting other beautiful parks such as Campo del Moro, Jardín del Capricho, Monte de El Pardo, Jardín Botánico, Casa de Campo, Parque de la Dehesa de la Villa or Parque Juan Carlos I. Outside of the city, in historical Aranjuez, you may also want to visit the Jardines Reales de Aranjuez.

Do not miss the Sierra de Guadarrama (with its beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers, such as Manzanares and Jarama or great landscapes such as La Pedriza or Peñalara), the Hayedo de Montejo (an impressive beech park) or the Monte de El Pardo (best preserved mediterranean forest in the city)

SPORTS

Madrid is a city that loves sports. Apart from celebrating international events such as Madrid Open and Eurobasket thanks to the city’s state of the art sports infrastructures, Madrid can offer its visitors the chance to practice mountain sports such as ski in any of the capital´s ski stations: Navacerrada, Cotos and Valdesquí. A wide range of water sports can also be enjoyed in any of its many lakes and reservoirs surrounding the mountain area. Golf is also a popular sport here and there are more than twenty courses spread across the region to practice it.

On the other hand, and if you are into football try not to miss a game from any of our city’s premier league teams such as world known Real Madrid or Atlético de Madrid or even Getafe F.C. more recently incorporated to our national premier league.
